District B Vaccine Policy Update

2022-03-03

In August of 2021, Bytown District unanimously adopted a mandatory vaccine policy that requires all minor hockey participants born in, or before, 2009 to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to participate in one of the Bytown District Minor Hockey Association programs.  Participants included: players, coaches, volunteers, on-ice officials, off-ice officials (timekeepers), executive committee members and guardians that needed to enter a dressing room.  In adopting this policy, Bytown District recognized that we had an important role to play in mitigating the increased risk factors that are always present in hockey including prolonged close contact in an indoor setting (e.g: an arena; dressing rooms and congregate areas).

On March 1st, the City of Ottawa amended their COVID 19 protocols and announced that COVID 19 vaccination would no longer be required to enter their public premises, including arenas.   Given there are five weeks left in the season - and our hockey community has responded positively to the policy - Bytown District has decided to retain the policy for the remainder of the season and will revisit over the summer.

Vaccines remain the strongest defence against transmission and severe outcomes of COVID-19.  We encourage all of our members 5 - 11 to receive their primary (1st and 2nd dose) of the COVID-19 vaccine, and for all members 12 and up to receive a booster as soon as they are eligible.

It has been a long two years and the impacts on players, coaches, volunteers on-ice officials, off-ice officials (timekeepers), executive committee members are too many to list.   We are hopeful for a positive and fun end to our season, a spring and summer that allows us all to recharge and renew our commitment to supporting minor hockey in our community and a much more ordinary and run of the mill 2022-23 season.
